- Preface. The Explanation Of The F.A.Q.
-
- An F.A.Q. (from now on represented without the dots) is a way to explain
- the topic of discussion (Ren And Stimpy) and help newbies and veterans avoid
- repetitive posts about a specific sub-topic (like "What was edited out of
- 'Powdered Toast Man'?"). Before you post a question about R&S, you should
- read this document to see if your question has already been answered.
-
- If you have corrections, additions, suggestions, comments, or hairballs,
- send them to Norman Sippel at ngsippel@miavx2.ham.muohio.edu with $47
- million. There is no guarantee that posted items will make it to my
- attention. For it to work, you have to MAIL it. Thank You.
-
- Nick Sayer will probably be happy to answer newbie questions. His
- electronic mail address is below in his signature.
-
- This FAQ and the two other Ren And Stimpy documents will be posted every
- four weeks, thanks to the local document poster on the Internet. Thank You
- Mr. Jonathan Kamens for helping me out and putting up with all the questions
- on form and posting these documents on the net!
-
- Copyright Acknowledgment: Before the FAQ continues, I want to
- acknowledge the copyrights and trademarks of Nickelodeon, Viacom, and all
- the other companies which are mentioned in this document and the other two
- (Encyclopedia, Guide). The purpose of the R&S documents (FAQ, Guide,
- Encyclopedia) are to inform people, and the documents are kept in my spare
- time and are kept for no profit.
-
- Distribution and Site File Access: This FAQ (both parts one and two), if
- kept on a file transfer protocol (FTP) site, must be kept in a public access
- section and be available for free; otherwise, the site may not carry this
- document. If a site accepts these terms, it may freely distribute this
- document as long as it remains in tact with proper disclaimers and credits.
-
- This document, or any derivative works thereof, may not be sold or
- redistributed for profit in any way without express written permission
- (through paper [snail] mail) of the editor, Norman G. Sippel. This
- includes, but is not limited to, translations into foreign languages, mass
- archival as on a CD_ROM, inclusion in commercially published compilations
- (books), and uploading this document to non-USENET services.
-
- This document represents the collective effort of many USENET Ren and Stimpy
- fans. We appreciate your honoring of this policy.

- The Ren And Stimpy Show: Frequently Asked Questions
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- This Edition Overrides All Previous Editions Up To
- And Including April 1994.
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
-
- 1. Who or What is Ren And Stimpy?
-
- "The Ren & Stimpy Show" is one of four cartoon shows (collectively known as
- "The Nicktoons") produced by Nickelodeon, a Cable TV channel in North
- America. The two main characters are an "asthma-hound" chihuahua named "Ren
- Hoek" (with an umlaut over the o), and a cat named "Stimpson J. Cat". The
- show's attraction is its shameless and gross physical humor, often
- consisting of nose-picking and farts (though there's more to it than that).
- It is suitable (and funny) for the whole family, though some have called it
- an acquired taste.
-
-
- 2. When and Where can I see R&S (Worldwide)?
-
- A. United States
-
- Currently, R&S can only be seen via cable TV or satellite. It airs on
- Nickelodeon (aka SNICK on Saturday nights) Saturday evening at 9 PM
- (Pacific/Eastern). It also airs Sunday mornings at 11 AM (Pacific/Eastern),
- though it appears that this time slot will continue with reruns. MTV is also
- airing the second season, apparently, but no hard information has reached
- this author. MTV showings are inferior to the showing on Nick, since they
- stick the MTV logo on the lower right corner and have more commercials. (By
- the way, SNICK has also started adding their own logos to each cartoon.) MTV
- also compresses the audio badly and doesn't start the show on time.
- Incidentally, MTV Networks, Inc., owns Nick. Apparently MTV is owned in
- large part by Viacom. On the marathon of January 1993, MTV didn't have the
- logo but edited the music of "Sven Hoek" and most show's order of cartoons.
-
- By the way, during the second season of R&S and the fourth season of "The
- Simpsons," Nick gave permission to Gracie Films to use R&S during "A Brother
- From The Same Planet." It was storyboarded or laid out (maybe both) by
- Chris Reccardi, one of the original people on R&S. On April 15, another
- mention of R&S made it onto "The Simpsons"; the set-up was at the Emmys
- where the R&S slide was not ready :).
-
- MTV has random airings of the show (see your local television book for times
- if any), and Nick had "Nick-Mania" weekend with 8 of the best Ren And
- Stimpys during the afternoon. Nick-Mania happened on April 24 and 25, 1993.
- Nick Mania for the weekend of May 8 and 9 has "SNICK Mania" so
- that R&S will be played two times, once for each SNICK. No more mass
- airings have been planned, but R&S were participants in the Slime Time
- Sweepstakes of both 1992 and 1993 editions.
-
- Season 3 began on November 20, 1993, according to Billy West when he came to
- Miami University on October 6, 1993. More details about his speech are in a
- post I made which is looking for a ftp site. MTV is playing "Fire Dogs" and
- several other videos of R&S in their rotation currently.
-
- "Son Of Stimpy" was aired (with a minor scene cut) on Nickelodeon twice
- during the Holiday season. Oh Joy!
-
- One new note for this edition: "Tiny Toons" did spoof R&S in their spring
- special with "Rank The Chicken & Stinky The Squirrel." I just wish I knew
- if Stinky was related to Slappy?! =O)
-
-
- B. Canada
-
- From Paul Engler (engler@cpsc.ucalgary.ca):
-
- Thanks for all the info you gave me yesterday. However, after reading the
- R&S FAQ I noticed that it is lacking the broadcast times in Canada. Up here
- the show airs at 8:30 EST, and 16:30 EST every Thursday, and again at 12:30
- EST Friday, on Much Music. (I'm sure this channel is available off of
- satellite although I can't remember where. It should be in any of the many
- monthly satellite guides.) The interesting thing about this is that they are
- still broadcasting all the episodes, including PTM which ran last Thursday,
- March 6.
-
- From ecurrent@zooid.guild.org:
-
- Don't forget that it's shown in Canada on MuchMusic (basically our version
- of MTV) on Thursdays at 12:30 PM (and since Much programs in blocks that are
- repeated several times a day, it is also repeated at 8:30 PM, and 4:30 AM &
- 8:30 AM on Friday). Much started airing R&S in September, 1992, and there
- was much happiness and rejoicing amongst those of us who had been surviving
- for months on bootlegged videos smuggled across the border. :-) They first
- aired all of the first season episodes in the same order as their original
- airings on Nick. They were then shown a second time, in the same order, and
- then during the third "loop" of first season episodes (sometime in January,
- 1993), they began airing the second season, once again in the same order as
- the original Nick showings. As of the end of February, 1993, they had aired
- all of the second season shows except for "Fake Dad" and "Monkey See, Monkey
- Don't" and they have started repeating the second season from the beginning
- once again.
-
- It's also worth noting that Much always airs episodes in the same form as
- their *original* Nick airings, so edits that appear in later Nick airings
- (i.e. the cuts to "PTM", etc.) are not reflected in the Much airings. Much
- also aired "Son of Stimpy", which was only aired on MTV in the US, not on
- Nick.
-
- From Trevor Paul Bugera (umbuger2@ccu.umanitoba.ca):
-
- On MUCHMUSIC's news show they had a little clip that Much was going to cut
- R&S from the schedule after thursday, but in August (around the 7-9th) they
- are going to have what they called all 13 episodes back to back. Tis a
- shame because it is my only source of R&S. I'll have to tape them.
-
- Editor's Note: The marathon was aired August 14, 1993, followed by Weird Al
- Television. MuchMusic's original versions of R&S may be replaced with
- edited ones if they return. City TV has rights to air R&S in Canada now. A
- video of "The Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen Theme" is being broadcasted, and
- according to rumor, it has charted #30 on the MuchMusic top songs of the
- week recently.
-
- From Jack Lee (cjlee@undergrad.math.uwaterloo.ca):
-
- In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, R&S is being shown on CITY-TV Channel 57 on
- Wednesdays @ 8pm. Two episodes at a time!
-
- From Adam Frampton (frampton@access.digex.net):
-
- The Canadian government is going on the Internet, starting November 5.
- Some nice little places to flame-- er send constructive critism are:
-
- Canadian Brodcasting Commision: utgpu!plan9!chyk!<cbc@utcc.utoronto.ca
- (is this the place that banned R&S??)
- C TV (did they air RnS?): utgpu!plan9!chyk!<ctv@utcc.utoronto.ca
-
- There are several other channels.. but no MuchMusic. See the EFFector
- newsletter for a complete listing (issue 6.02 I believe)
-
- Ed. Note: I have had no new recent info. on Canadian airings. Anyone want
- to expand on if they are still on/off/what's the deal here please?
-
- C. United Kingdom / Netherlands
-
- As of September 1, 1993, Nickelodeon is broadcasting on some cable systems
- in the United Kingdom (what and which cable systems?). Nick has opted not to
- show R&S in the UK, but instead, they sold the rights to BBC2. Netherlands
- can also receive R&S too--Joy!
-
- ** UK R&S Fans: Thanks to everyone for the overwelming response to help!!!
-
- From Edwin Yau (ey@unix.brighton.ac.uk):
- >Norman G. Sippel (ngsippel@miavx2.ham.muohio.edu) writes:
- >I was wondering...isn't EuroNick playing R&S? Wouldn't BBC2 overlap or
- >some junk?. :)
-
- As far as I can tell from satellite listings and so on (and unless any UK
- satellite viewer can prove me wrong), EuroNick hasn't been showing R&S at
- all! Somehow the BBC managed to get a hold of it first! I guess it's their
- answer for not getting "The Simpsons" for non-satellite viewers. At present
- R&S will most likely be scheduled for an evening (6pm) air-time on Def-II,
- either on Tuesday or Friday.
-
- From Mike Chace (mikec@praxis.co.uk):
-
- Ren and Stimpy are shown on BBC2 (the UK's non-commercial "cultured"
- channel) at 6.25pm on Monday evenings and repeated at 12.40am (now 12.10am)
- on Saturday mornings (ie very late Friday night).
-
- On Monday evenings they are shown as part of the "Def II" slot, so-called
- "Yoof" (youth) programming which tries to be hip-and-trendy.
-
- This week's (March 7-14) Radio Times, a BBC TV listings magazine, has a
- competition where you can win a Ren and Stimpy game for the Sega System!
-
- Ed. Note: See the Encyclopedia for detailed info. on BBC2 showings.
-
- As of May 1994, BBC2 has lost its contract rights to air R&S. This leaves
- the Netherlands without R&S, but UK fans can watch R&S on EuroNick.
-
- From Martin Small (Martin_Small.Sbd-E@rx.xerox.com):
- I will hopefully begin mailing you lists of the episodes that have just
- started showing on Euronick, they began last weekend with:
-
- "Robin Hoek/Nurse Stimpy" (Saturday May 7th, Midday GMT)
- "Space Madness/The Boy Who Cried Rat" (Sunday May 8th, Midday GMT)
-
- D. New Zealand
-
- From Mark Weatherhead (ZOOL175@csc.canterbury.ac.nz):
-
- At the moment R&S is being aired on Channel 2 at 6:00pm on Saturdays. They
- are currently showing (again) mostly episodes from the first series, we have
- hardly seen any of the second series.
-
- Unfortunately, R&S seems to attract a lot of attention from the sort of
- people who believe that they "know best" what people should and shouldn't be
- watching, so probably the program will be re-scheduled at a different
- time--again.
-
- From Paul Q. (physajh@otago.ac.nz):
-
- Ren & Stimpy in NEW ZEALAND has gone from obscurity to dementia. Not only is
- it now prime time T.V. (yes, yes I knew it was on WHAT NOW but I'm usually
- still unconscious at 0800 hours Saturday, and Yes, Yes I saw SOME episodes
- at 4.30pm but I usually still have a headache then too!!)
-
- Anyway in NEW ZEALAND our major national T.V. and Radio Magazine stated in
- an entire one page article the following facts.
-
- Editor's Note: NZ showings are on the rocks as well as Canadian showings.
- Keep looking in your TV book for times and channels. Listings for NZ shows
- have been provided by Kerrin Jones (Kerrin.Jones@comp.vuw.ac.nz) in the R&S
- Encyclopedia. Kerrin has a temporary lapse in Internet service and hopes to
- be back on soon; until then, a friend will e-mail the list for Kerrin.
- (Since the NZ information is aging, it would be nice to have an update in
- general on R&S activity please.)
-
- E. Australia
-
- From Darren O'Shaughnessy (darren@cs.anu.edu.au):
-
- The Ren & Stimpy show is being shown in Australia on Network Ten's "The Big
- Breakfast". It runs from about 7:30 - 8:00, Monday to Friday, although the
- time does vary. No cuts appear to have been made, and the episodes seem to
- be in the right order, without omissions (so far). The first episode was
- screened 5/7/93 (7/5/93 to you yanks).
-
- From Gerald C. Chick (g.chick@trl.oz.au):
-
- Ren & Stimpy has been showing since 5 July 1993 (or maybe earlier, but I
- think that was the first episode), daily at approximately 7:30 AM on the
- TEN Network's Big Breakfast Show. If advertisements for NERF-pellet machine
- pistols (with imitation Borg) and "Tinkle Tots" make you want to chunder,
- set your video.
-
- Editor's Note: Listings for this have been provided by Darren O'Shaughnessy
- (darren@cs.anu.edu.au) in the R&S Encyclopedia.
-
- From Zik Saleeba (zik@zikzak.apana.org.au):
- >freako@suburbia.apana.org.au (damian caynes) writes:
-
- >Here in oz we get ren n stimpy at a ridiculous timeslot, like 7:30am on
- >monday... this is damn awkward and i've only caught one episode, tho i was
- >hooked instantly. I was half asleep and they were goin off like Itchy &
- >Scratchy on illegal substances, and it was preeeeeeeety strange...
-
- And what's worse they're moving it to 7am starting tomorrow! It's
- being edged out to make space for "The Adventures of T Rex" - Jurassic
- Park has a lot to answer for :-( Imagine the horror at hauling
- yourself out of bed at 7:30am only to catch a last few tantalising
- seconds of Ren'n'Stimpy followed by some trashy dinosaur `toon.
- Eucccch!
-
- From Darren O'Shaughnessy (Darren.OShaughnessy@cs.anu.edu.au):
- >From: Norman G. Sippel (ngsippel@miavx2.ham.muohio.edu):
- >
- > I can wait till this weekend to upload the new FAQ, so I'll wait for your
- > update tomorrow (if you would please include new shows). Can you give me
- > more on this "Maynard F#" and "JJJ" ? What are they?
-
- The TV guide says that Ren & Stimpy's timeslot (7 a.m. Monday) has been
- taken by some monstrosity called "Piggsburgh Pigs". I don't know when, if
- ever, we'll see more episodes :( Lucky I've got them all on tape to watch at
- my leisure.
-
- Maynard F# Crabbes is a mad DJ on the national alternative radio
- network JJJ. He liberally intersperses so-called normal music with stuff
- like ABBA, Weird Al Yankovic, and now Ren & Stimpy, and has a penchant for
- Hawaiian shirts, flares, and rectangular specs. Do you really want to know
- more? 8*}
-
- From Robert Dennys (robertd@psy.uq.oz.au):
-
- Note that R&S is back on the air here in Australia on Channel TEN, but not
- at its previous weekday-morning slot - its on 8:30 am Saturday mornings.
-
- F. Iceland
-
- From Jon Ingi Ingimundarson (jii@rhi.hi.is):
-
- Our state-owned television RUV started broadcasting the first season
- shows two weeks ago. Currently they've shown show #3 and show #6
- as listed in the Ren and Stimpy FAQ. It airs Wednesday at 6:30pm.
- The listing in the papers goes something like this:
-
- "Ren and Stimpy: A cartoon show about the dog Ren and the cat
- Stimpy."
-
- The tv-station has apparently bought 6 episodes.
-
- They were shown on our state-owned televsion station RUV (Rikisutvarpid-
- Sjonvarp). RUV broadcasts between ca. 18:00-23:30 weekdays and 12:00-
- 1:00 weekends. And show around 5-10 US shows each week (this week
- it's 4). Why RandS were chosen is a mystery to me.
-
- Although they were shown at a very bad time (18:30) they got an ok
- publicity and luckily weren't dragged into the whole Beavis+Butthead,
- The Program stupidity.
-
- The shows were shown complete, without (as usual) commercials and in
- Stereo. (Editor's Note: Maybe I should move to get uncut episodes? :)
-
- It is not certain that season 2 will be shown here since tv-stations
- often buy shows only for one season and then move onto the next show.
-
- Editor's Note: Jon keeps a listing of episodes for Iceland in the R&S
- encyclopedia. Unfortunately, during my previous month's downloading, I have
- lost the Iceland info. beyond this. Jon, can you please email me a new
- copy? (FYI: I ask here since my emails have been going unanswered.)
-
- G. Other Nations, Countries, and Uncharted Regions Of Space
-
- Dozens of other countries have or will be getting R&S. Please e-mail the
- times, places, and other relevant information if you want your country
- (especially United Kingdom) added to this section. (And no, home video
- airings don't count :)
-
- Here's a short list of rumored countries which I need info.:
- Sweden, Japan (I've seen a translated version), Germany,
- China, Norway, and Finland.
-
- One person e-mailed me asking "Can I do an airing list?" I told them to
- please make it clear and consise, use my numbering scheme (confusion is
- minimized by using standardization between continents), and if they want me
- to add it to the R&S Encyclopedia, please follow a nice format (use mine as
- an example if you wish).
-
- All countries are appreciated!! John K. will soon get to see this section,
- so please, let him know you are watching!!
-
- **Note To Country Episode Keepers**: Please e-mail your new lists when they
- are ready, and please continue using the R&S Encyclopedia numbering system.
- Good job on your work and thank you for your continuing support!
-
-
- 3. My site seems to get two R&S newsgroups. What's the deal?
-
- At the time a newsgroup for R&S was being discussed, the original idea was
- for the alt.fan group. Many (including Nick Sayer) counter-proposed that it
- should be under alt.tv. When it came time to create the groups, both
- newsgroups went out. It is the poster's opinion that since it is a TV show,
- it belongs in alt.tv. The alt.tv group is not called 'ren-and-stimpy'
- because that would be too long for certain (broken) news programs and
- operating systems. 'ren-&-stimpy' is inappropriate because it contains a
- non-alphanumeric character other than '- or _'.
-
- Many sites, like the editor's, have both newsgroups' postings going into one
- newsgroup, so duplicate postings will be prevalent at times.
-
- Currently, UseNet considers alt.fan.ren-and-stimpy valid, according to
- UseNet's valid groups in the newsgroup log in news.groups.
-
- *:NOTE:* As an added bonus, keep tabs on rec.arts.animation,
- alt.tv.nickelodeon, and rec.arts.tv for R&S news because some people do NOT
- get the R&S newsgroups. Also, rec.music.dementia will have lists of the Dr.
- Demento show's Funny Five which sometimes features the "Happy Happy Joy Joy"
- and "Don't Whiz On The Electric Fence" songs!
-
-
- 4. How do I pronounce Ren's name?
-
- The name is apparently Dutch [*], and thus an English pronunciation will
- only be approximate. It ends up as "Hork" (rhymes with "pork"). They play
- with this in the show and intentionally mispronounce it "HO-ack" or "HO-ehk"
- from time to time. His first name rhymes with "pen," of course.
-
- [*] From what we know about Ren's cousin Sven, he is Danish.
- It seems like both Ren and Sven are a mixture of different European
- cultures.
-
- From Serge K. (koffsde@hacktic.nl):
- In entry 4, there's an entry about the pronounciation of Ren's name. As
- stated there, it is a Dutch name. Well, I live in The Netherlands and
- watch R&S on the BBC.
-
- So here's the addition. In the Dutch language, "Hoek" is spelled just as
- "Hook" in the English language. You just have to give it a somewhat
- sharper sound to the "oo"-sound. But, there's an umlaut on the "o", and in
- the Dutch language, it's impossible to put it there.
-
- So there's only one conclusion: Ren is German! It's the only language that
- supports his name with the umlaut. The pronunciation is still the
- same... So just keep it as "Hook"...
-
- Editor's Note: There has been a conclusion reached on Ren's name. His
- name, according to Comics Interview #131, came from John K.'s landlord at
- the time of his creation. Stimpy's name, btw, came frm John K.'s roommate
- in college, who's nickname was "Stimpy" Kadoogen.
-
-
- 5a. Who makes R&S?
-
- The creative force behind R&S is John Kricfalusi. He is also Ren's voice.
- John K.'s last name is pronounced "KRIS-fah-loo-see". He is 36 and from
- Ottawa.
-
- John K is "stunned" that so many adults watch R&S. (See #18 for the scoop
- about his reaction to this FAQ)
-
- From ebh@mink.att.com:
- He [John K] was a major creative force (under the [Ralph] Bakshi umbrella)
- behind the New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, and he was also involved with The
- Jetsons.
-
- Stimpy's voice is Billy West. Billy West is also the voice of "Doug," one of
- the other Nicktoons. West used to work at WBCN in Boston, which is famous
- for shock-radio. He is also "Announcer," "Sven," "Ren," and "Flies (from
- Ren's Toothache)" according to _Film_Threat_ (and what I know). (I have a
- file about his background I have posted. E-mail me for it or if you have an
- FTP site I can put it on please.)
-
- When John K. left R&S, Billy West is doing Ren on an interim basis until a
- new person could be found. He debuted on "What'll We Do Till Then?" with
- Stimpy blowing himself up like a balloon. Vanessa Coffey, the producer for
- all the Nicktoons, has announced that they are looking through talent
- agencies for a replacement.
-
- Billy West is scheduled to come to Miami University of Ohio in early
- October. More details will be posted when I get them (and yes, Miami is
- where I go to college).
-
- Second season credits list "The Spumco Players" or "The Players", presumably
- the voice artists. They include (from "In The Army / Powdered Toast Man"):
- Harris Peet, Cheryl Chase, Michael Pataki, Bob Camp, Vincent Waller, John
- K., Jim Smith, Henry Porch, Charlie Birssette and Billy West. Many of these
- are people with other jobs within Spumco.
-
- So far there have been two acknowledged guest stars: Gary Owens as Powdered
- Toast Man, and Frank Zappa as The Pope (both in "Powdered Toast Man"). Gary
- Owens has also appeared in several bumpers as the part of the announcer.
-
- Three unannounced guest stars have appeared on R&S. In "Stimpy's Fan Club,"
- Soleil Moon Frye (of "Punky Brewster" fame) was one of the fans. In "Visit
- To Anthony", Randy Quaid guest stars, and Anthony plays himself.
-
- The creative organization is called "Spumco". The company motto is "The
- Danes call it quality." ("Spumco" has also been reportedly an acronym which
- has long been forgotten.) See #7b for details.
-
- The boy whose picture is shown with the motto is Jimmy, the hapless boy -
- the company mascot (From lazlo@triton.unm.edu). It's said that he is John
- K.'s oldest creation for T.V. and his "best" character (_Cinfantastique_).
-
- After John K. was fired, there was a split. A "puppet" company called
- "Games Productions" (a.k.a. "Stabco" and "Milkmen") makes and creates Ren
- And Stimpy. John K. is on his own with Spumco making "George Liquor" and "He
- Hog" for this fall. Games Productions is very tightly controlled by Nick, so
- their scripts don't seem to be half as funny as John K.'s where he was wild,
- wacky, and funny.
-
- Billy West ended up getting the job of Ren (for Season 2 though), and Ron
- Hughart is now directing some of the shows. Ron H. works within the
- organization as a Timing Director. Recently, Games Productions changed its
- name to Games Animations. What this exactly means for R&S is this: they're a
- bunch of Nick-eediots!
-
-

-
- ****************************************************************************
- If the Tiny Toons fans can write in and get results, why not us?! :) Please
- write into Nickelodeon! Tell them whether you like seeing weeks of reruns,
- the quality of material decreasing, or any other gripes or compliments about

- ****************************************************************************
- John K. responded to my letter, so let Spumco know you exist! :) OH JOY!!
- ****************************************************************************
- *:NOTE:* Avoid using standardized letters--they look bad because Nick would
- think only a few people are writing in instead of hundreds and are usually
- thrown away. Be original :).

-
-
- 6. What's the deal with the character and shows with "George Liquor" ?
-
- Nick has had a struggle with the character "George Liquor." He is a
- "typical" macho man (who shares hobbies with "Earl Pitts, American," if you
- have heard his funny commentaries created by Gary Burbank on 700 WLW in
- Cincinnati, Ohio, but without the beer [for now]) who likes to treat R&S
- like they're in the army. He likes guns (as shown in _Film_Threat_) and
- wants to win at everything. He is your average plain egotistical guy who
- treats everyone rough especially Mr. Horse and The Judge in "Dog Show."
-
- Nick shudders at this character because he is so "adult." His cartoons are
- probably the ones which John K. got himself into trouble. We see a glimpse
- of him in "The Boy Who Cried Rat!" as the man who runs R&S out of the trash
- cans; he also appears in "Robin Hoek" as the sheriff. The second season
- basically revolves around him. He was the one who sent R&S to the army (and
- gave Ren the $20 which he in turn gave to the Sergeant), dog show (and gave
- Ren the barbed treatment), and many other places (including in "In The Army"
- where R&S have a picture of him on the wall between their beds). He treats
- them with little respect and kindness, so when Ren revolts against George,
- he throws a fit. In "Man's Best Friend," there is a scene where Ren hits
- George over the head with a oar for 3 minutes and in slow motion once (which
- will be cut out of the final version, by the way) for a total of over twenty
- hits.
-
- This type of violence wasn't taken lightly by Nick; they banned "Dog Show"
- and "Man's Best Friend." In _R&S_Exposed_ magazine, they totally ignored
- the character completely. When George was first presented, someone in Nick
- thought his last name was "lick her"; Nick still didn't like the idea of a
- character named after a chemical depressant. The jury is still out on the
- future of his cartoons and his character. The official word is that George
- Liquor was given back to John K. (because of Nick's so-called ruined image)
- and will be appearing in future Spumco projects. Currently, there is a deal
- in the works for George to appear in his own show for FOX or another network.
-
- George Liquor is played by Michael Pataki. He has appeared in many movies
- and series, including the most recent appearances as the voice of "The Cow"
- on "The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse" and "Sewer King" on "Batman: The
- Animated Series." He's been on several "Star Trek" shows and movies, both
- new and old.
-
- June 1993: "Man's Best Friend" is being re-animated according to
- _Cinfantastique_ magazine, June 1993, so George is going soft for Nick.
- John K. is going to bring back George in a show with Jimmy The Hapless Boy
- in a similar format and attitudes as R&S in the fall.
-
- BTW, he's my favorite character on R&S besides R&S and PTM :).
-
- July 1993: I want to mention that Nick shudders at George with the same
- shudders as Ren. They don't like Ren mad or upset because they think it
- will scare the kids. Bologna.
-
- October 1993: Billy West expressed that Nick is going to have "Man's Best
- Friend" re-animated. Those joiks! :(
-
- December 1993: George, according to WCK issue 2, was handed back to John K.
- from Nick conditionally. For example, he can't be a child molester or a
- mass murderer. (John K. was quoted to say something to the effect, "How
- many people does he need to kill to make him a mass murderer?" :)
-
- May 1994: "Man's Best Friend" is being pushed by John K. to Nick Home Video.
- From David A Gerstein (David.A.Gerstein@williams.edu):
-
- I was just talking to animation historian Jerry Beck yesterday
- about "Man's Best Friend" on video, and specifically John K's reaction
- to this.
-
- Turns out John K. has been after Sony to get after Nick to let
- them put MBF on tape, censored or uncensored. He WANTS it to be part
- of the official line.
-
- And here's why, as I realized after hearing this.
-
- You see, although Nick will earn money from the tapes, it's
- what's known as "guilt money" (that's my own word for it), because
- people's enthusiasm for the tape will be further reminders for Vanessa
- Coffey that she shouldn't have given John K. the bum deal she handed
- him. All the more evidence that she was WRONG. If sales of MBF on
- video aren't exceptional, that's all the more evidence that no one
- CARES, and that she can do just ANYTHING.
-
- So by telling readers of alt.tv.r&s that they shouldn't buy
- the tape, we are doing a DISSERVICE to John K! He WANTS it to be
- released in some form (edited or not), and if HE wants them to release
- it, we should support the project.
-
-
- 7a. What are the words to...
-
- ... the 'Log' song?
-
- "What rolls down stairs alone or in pairs
- rolls over your neighbor's dog?
- What's great for a snack and fits on your back?
- It's Log, Log, Log!
-
- It's Log, Log, it's big, it's heavy, it's wood.
- It's Log, Log, it's better than bad, it's good!
- Everyone wants a log! You're gonna love it, Log!
- Come on and get your log! Everyone needs a Log!"
-
- ... the words to Stimpy's insane ravings in "Mad Dog Hoek"?
-
- From _Cinfantastique_ magazine, June 1993, p. 46:
-
- "I like Darren, he is my friend! I like you AND him--he
- likes me and I like him!! He likes you, I HOOOOPE! I LIKE
- HIS AUTOGRAPH, IT IS A NICE PICTURE!!!!! HE IS NIIIIICCEE!!!"
-
- ... the jingle for "Sugar Sod Pops"?
-
- "If you like grass, if you like dirt,
- eat Sugar Sod Pops, it can't hurt!"
-
- ... the Oath?
-
- "I do hereby promise only to watch the Ren & Stimpy show,
- to make under-leg noises during the good scenes,
- to wear unwashed lederhosen every single day of
- the rest of my life."
-
- At least one poster claims 'under-leg' is underling,
- but the consensus is for the former. Under-leg noises
- being farts, of course. (Hardly an episode goes by
- that someone doesn't cut one). Underlings are people
- working under a boss. So the former makes more sense.
-
- By the way, Under-leg is the proper spelling, not "underleg,"
- according to the R&S calendar. (Also appeared in the R&S Comics)
-
- ... the words to the "New Fan Initiation" Oath Of Servitude?
-
- (Bring $1 million in small change before reciting:)
-
- I, (Insert Full Name Here), human, promise to watch the R&S Show
- until my eyeballs implode, even if it goes into 10 years of reruns!
- (And?!) I promise to memorize whole episodes and recite the lines
- shamelessly in unwelcome situations. (And? And? Oh Yeah!) I promise
- to wear unwashed lederhosen every single day of the rest of my life!
-
- (That's It! You're in our secret club!)
-
- ... Nurse Stimpy's oath?
-
- "I do solemnly swear by the sacred bedpan to fix the patient,
- and ease his wretched suffering, even until all hope is lost."
-
- ... The Muddy Mudskipper theme song?
-
- "Who's the greatest mudskipper of them all?
- Who can skip in the mud with the greatest of ease?
- What kind of wonderful guy?
-
- Who can crawl like a dog without scraping his knees? [*]
- Who's got segmented eyes?
-
- It's Muddy Mudskipper, it's Muddy Mudskipper
- It's the Muddy Mudskipper show!"
-
- [*] According to WCK (a Film Threat publication), they claim the line
- should be "Who can skip in the mud without breaking his knees." Which
- one is correct?
-
- ... Stimpy's "Gritty Kitty" poem?
-
- "Gritty Kitty ain't so pretty, but it's really thick
- It fills my cat box oh so snug, it always does the trick
- I like to rub it on my toes and squish and squish and squish
- It ne'er offends my tender nose, like a smelly fish
- Its texture is a joy to me, it's just as smooth as silk
- It makes my little whiskers twitch, it stays crunchy even in milk
- I may not be the president, I may not be the pope
- But as long as I have Gritty Kitty, I shall never mope."
-
- ... The "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song?
-
- "Hello, boys and girls. This is your old pal, Stinky Wizzleteats. [*]
- This is a song about a whale. No! This is a song about being happy!
- That's right! It's the Happy Happy Joy Joy song!
-
- [chorus]
- Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy
- Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy
- Happy Happy Joy Joy Happy Happy Joy Joy
- Happy Happy Joy Joy Joy!
-
- I don't think you're happy enough! That's right! I'll teach you to
- be happy! I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs! Now, boys and
- girls, let's try it again!
-
- [chorus]
-
- If'n you aint the grandaddy of all liars! The little critters of
- nature... They don't know that they're ugly! That's very funny, a
- fly marrying a bumblebee! I told you I'd shoot! But you didn't
- believe me! Why didn't you believe me?!
-
- [chorus without last line]
- Happy Happy Happy Happy
- Happy Happy Happy Happy
- Happy Happy Joy Joy Joy!"
-
- * Stinky's last name debate is over. The calendar of R&S and
- the flood of fall 1992 articles about our twisted twosome
- (including U.S.A. Today newspaper) has supported "Wizzleteats."
-
- ... Ren's speech just before going to sleep in "In The Army?"
-
- "Good night, Stimpy. Now all I need is eight hours of
- uninterrupted sleep."
-
- ... Ren's speech after the peeling-H-bombs scene in "In The Army"?
-
- "Psst. Hey Guido. It's all so clear to me now. I'm the keeper
- of the cheese. And you're the lemon merchant. Get it? And he
- knows it. That's why he's gonna kill us. So we have to beat it.
- Yeah. Before he lets loose the marmosets on us! Don't worry,
- little missy! I'll save you!"
-
- ... The Hangin' Song in "Out West"?
-
- "OOOOhhh, Lord loves a hangin', that's why he give us necks
- It tightens up our vocal chords, and loosens up our pecs.
- So if you are a horse thief and guilty to the bone,
- Go ahead and blame a friend and you won't hang alone!
-
- It may be hard to swaller, but you'll be three feet taller,
- And find new ways to entertain your friends.
- You say you are a villian, but can't abide by killin',
- Go ahead and steal yourself a horse.
-
- Two three eleven or five seven [take it, boys].
- I'm a pickin' and I'm a swingin'!
- I'm ignorant, and I'm ugly!
- That you are, boys.
-
- OOOOhhh, The Lord loves a hangin', and so do we by heck!
- So go and get a lasso and decorate your neck!
- Oh we is awful ignorant and uglier than sin,
- so go ahead and cut us down... And hang us all again!
-
- Hangin', that is. Swing a spell.
- (Ya'll bring the kids next time, ya hear?)" [*]
-
- [*] This line was edited out at the last minute. This line came
- from the article from _Film_Threat_ magazine.
-
- ... the words to the "Royal Canadian Yaksmen Anthem"?
-
- Follow the bouncing Ren as you sing! (Karaoke Time:)
-
- "Our country reeks of trees,
- Our yaks are very large,
- And they smell like rotting beef carcasses.
- And we have to clean up after them
- And our saddle sores are the best.
- We proudly wear women's clothing
- And searing sand blows up our skirts.
- And the buzzards, they soar overhead,
- And poisonous snakes will devour us whole,
- Our bones will bleach in the sun.
- And we will probably go to /hell/ [*],
- And that is our great reward,
- For being The-uh Ro-yal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen!"
- (Repeat As Necessary)
-
- [*] Hell is never said but is bleeped out all the time and is crossed out in
- the Karaoke section. (And yes, Karaoke is spelled correctly!:)
-
- ... Ren's crazy speech in "Space Madness"?
-
- "...I'll just lie back and think pleasant thoughts.
- Chicken pot pie... Chocolate covered RAIsins...
- EEGlazed Hammmmm... They think I'm crazy... But I
- know better... It is not I who am crazy... It is
- I who am MAD!... Didn't you hear 'em? Didn't you
- see the crowds?!! Oh my beloved ice cream bar...
- How I love to lick your creamy center... eeyaaarghruch...
- eeyaarghrunch... eeyaarghrunch... And your oh-so-nutty
- chocolate covering... You're not like the others...
- You like the same things I do... Wax paper...
- Boiled football leather... Dog breath... WE'RE NOT
- HITCHHIKING ANYMORE... WE'RE RIDING...
-
- (Stimpy: "Stop it. You're talking crazy")
-
- Oh no... I know what you want... You coveteth my ice
- cream bar!
-
- (Stimpy: "Come on now")
-
- No you don't! You can't take it from me now!
- I've had this ice cream bar since I was a child...
- People... Always trying to take it from me... Why don't they
- leave me ALONE?!!!
-
- (Stimpy: "Easy now...")
-
- Back off man!!!... Don't make me use this... One
- step closer, I'm warning ya... Don't make me use it!
- Now you've done it! You... forced me to use it!!!...
-
- ... the words to Stimpy's Ode To Ren commercial?
-
- "What is a friend?
- A friend misses you when you are away, for even for a short while,
- A friend is always there to try your latest inventions,
- and to protect you from yourself, and only a true friend would scratch
- your back, pluck your eyebrows, do your nails, and brush your teeth
- all out of the goodness of his heart. Ren is my best pal.
- [Announcer: R&S - an ode to friendship.]"
-
- ... the words to the song about the board game in "Sven Hoek" ?
-
- "Don't whiz on the electric fence!" (TV Show Version)
-
- Someone timed a test print of the segment of this song and
- reported to the group that 3-4 lines of song is missing. The song has
- turned up on the R&S CD "You Eediot" in its full glory.
-
- ... the words Sven repeats in "Sven Hoek" ?
-
- From: David R. Zinkin (zinkin@eerie.acsu.buffalo.edu)
-
- I just checked my tape of "Sven Hoek" to confirm the quote. It's
- "Daaaah, he is Ole, you are Sven. He is Ole, you are Sven."
- Sven says it twice, once after Sven tells him to "say something
- intelligent" and once after Stimpy says "Daaah, hello, superior
- creature!"
-
- Editor's Note: Sven says this a total of four times and holds up
- his hat everytime he says it.
-
- ... Mr. Horse's Spanish response in "World Crisis"?
-
- Ren claims it translates to "No sir, he doesn't like it," but
- Mike Loux discovered a hidden joke.
-
- From Mike Loux (mloux@rm42.ucc.uconn.edu):
-
- "Las cucarachas entran, pero no pueden salir."
- (The cockroaches enter, but they can't leave)
-
-
- 7b. What is the meaning behind or origin of...
-
- [ Much of the items that seem like obscure or trivial humor are in
- fact non sequiturs. There's no meaning. They're just there for the
- hell of it. ]
-
- ... Hwarfing?
-
- The action of Stimpy coughing up a hairball (usually on Ren).
- (This should end the debate on its spelling.)
-
- ... Vitamin "F" in "Powdered Toast With Vitamin 'F'"?
-
- "F" is for "Fart." (No big surprise:)
-
- ... "Raymond Spum" or "Spum"?
-
- Raymond Spum is a joke and a made-up alias for John Kricfalusi. Anytime
- he didn't like a cartoon he worked on or was in protest about it, he
- used this fictitious name. John K. also used it in the first season
- credits. All the stories about him are fiction; what do you think R&S
- is? :)
-
- Blaine Erickson (erickson@uhunix.uhcc.hawii.edu) has posted to the
- group adding that "spum" is not a real Danish word, and that the
- Danish word for quality is "kvalitet".
-
- John K. has claimed that "spum" is a brand name of a product in
- Denmark.
-
- ... "George Liquor"?
-
- In _Film_Threat_ magazine, John K. said that he saw a sign in the late
- seventies with the words "George Liquor". He was so crazy over the name
- (and the fact that someone forgot to put in the possessive) that he went
- and drew the picture. (The sign was for a business selling alcohol,
- obviously.) By the way, his cousin's name is Corn Liquor and was going
- to appear in a future episode called "Hillbilly Hoek" (_Cinfantastique_
- magazine). (This episode will probably not be produced unfortunately.)
-
- See the George Liquor section for more details.
-
- ... "Stinky Wizzleteats"?
-
- According to _Cinfantastique_ magazine, it came from "The Littlest
- Giant" when Bob Camp talked about Ren's Cow's "Wizzled Teats".
- John K. loved it so much, he used it as a name.
-
- ... The Crocostimpy Bus? [ "Untamed World" ]
-
- Non sequitur. For the original joke according to _Cinfantastique_
- magazine, the Crocostimpy was going to say "What's The Big Sleep, Ren?"
- (a reference to Big House Blues quote by Stimpy) and hop onto the bus.
- A bunch of lady Crocostimpies were going to follow the bus on foot
- and yell "He's dead, you idoit! Don't you know what dead is?"
- Now you know the rest of the story.
-
- ... "We're not hitchhiking anymore! We're riding!" [ "Space Madness" ]
-
- From jeffy@athena.mit.edu:
- This is apparently from the movie "Centurion." The line was
- delivered by Kirk Douglas (see below).
-
- From Jon Bondurant (gowan@sugar.NeoSoft.COM):
-
- This is actually wrong. I've seen the movie several times and
- it's actually _Champion_. Kirk Douglas plays a loner who boxes one night
- to get out of debt and later decides to take it up as a profession. At
- one point, he goes off the deep end and becomes very self-serving and
- full of himself. He tries to convince his brother, Connie, that it's
- all for the best. (paraphrased) "C'mon, Connie..we're in the big time,
- we've made it. We're not hitchhiking any more, we're riding!"
- It's actually a pretty good movie.
-
- ... The face that rises and sets over Hollywood during "Stimpy's Big
- Day?"
-
- From ebh@mink.att.com:
- The face is apparently Kirk Douglas. According to John K.,
- Kirk Douglas was the [partial?] inspiration for Ren.
-
- ... The various narrations in the "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song?
-
- "I'll teach your grandmother to suck eggs"
- This apparently paraphrases an old saying. There are many film and
- TV uses of this phrase. It means (roughly) to teach someone
- what they already know. Furthermore, "to suck eggs" is apparently
- a euphemism for nosing into other people's business.
-
- From zeus@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu:
- "The little critters of nature -- They don't know that they're ugly."
- This is a line from the film "Summer Magic" starring Berl Ives and
- Hayley Mills.
-
- ... Ren's various insane ravings?
-
- So far Ren has been portrayed as being outright insane in
- at least two cartoons (his general level of sanity is
- as questionable as any cartoon character's, of course,
- but we're talking serious psychosis here): "In The Army"
- after he's done peeling H-bombs, and in "Space Madness".
- During both of these intervals Ren gives speeches that
- are as nutty as a fruitcake. Talking about running from
- marmosets, boiled football leather, things like that.
- As far as the net knows (at the moment), these are simply things
- that the writer(s) thought were silly enough for a raving looney
- to think sensible.
-
- ... the man playing the accordian in "Sven Hoek" ?
-
- This is the first live action character on the show.
- From the many pictures I have seen in the different pictures,
- it looks like Bob Camp. It appears to be a "throw together" opening;
- according to _Cinfantastique_, it was put together at the last second.
-
- ... Husband and Wife from "The Boy Who Cried Rat!" and several others?
-
- John Kricfalusi is said to be a big fan of J. R. "Bob" Dobbs and
- Connie of the SubGenius culture. They are an incarnation of a married
- couple of the 1950s and the like. Otherwise known as "Mr. and Mrs.
- Pipe" or the '50s suburbanites.
-
-
- (If you want any other quotes or segments explained or included with
- explanations, please e-mail me.)
-
-
- 8. Is it "No sir, I _DON'T_ like it", or "No sir, I _DIDN'T_
- like it"?
-
- Both. "Don't" is heard in "Stimpy's Big Day/The Big Shot," and "didn't" is
- heard in "Fire Dogs," and "Marooned." In Season II we have a new variation
- in "Out West:" "WELL sir, I don't like it." Another variation is in "Rubber
- Nipple Salesmen:" "WEll sir, I don't think I have a use for rubber nipples!"
-
- By the way, Billy West is now doing Mr. Horse. Games Production plans to
- use Mr. Horse as a remembrance to John K., not as a weapon against him.
-
- Mr. Horse has appeared as a cameo on several cartoons but has starred in two
- bumpers. Yes sir, those appearances were Emmy material! :)
-
- FYI: He is on the picture in Anthony's bedroom in "Visit To Anthony" and on
- Ren's wall (behind Stimpy and the flensing machine) in "Nurse Stimpy."

- The Ren And Stimpy Show: Frequently Asked Questions
- Part Two Of Two
-
- Written By: Nick Sayer

-
- BEGIN PART TWO
-
- 9. Does anyone have a list of episodes?
-
- It is posted at the same time as this FAQ. A more complete breakdown of
- showings and background is also posted at the same time called "The Ren And
- Stimpy Encyclopedia." See #16 for more information about archived
- information.
-
-
- 10. What is the title of the one that spoofs "Wild Kingdom"?
-
- This is a point of controversy. The titles read "A Cartoon / Written by Jim
- Smith & John K. / Storyboards by Jim Smith / Directed by John K. / Untamed
- World".
-
- Some believe it is titled simply "Untamed World" under the theory that the
- first thing you see doesn't have to be the title. It would have been awkward
- to put the credits after "Untamed World" because of how the action goes. It
- would have been similarly awkward to start off with "Written by". "A
- Cartoon" was thus simply used to intro the credits.
-
- Some believe that since "A Cartoon" is capitalized and appears by itself
- that it must be a title, and call it "A Cartoon" or "A Cartoon: Untamed
- World".
-
- Official word from Spumco has reached the author (from
- jeffy@athena.mit.edu) that Spumco folk internally referred to it as
- "Nature Show".
-
- In one of the new cartoons, a sequel named "Untamed World 2: Lair Of The
- Lummox" may prove the name to be "Untamed World." Keep your VCRs ready,
- folks, because they are getting close to airing this one soon.
-
- The R&S Comics use the title "Untamed World" for their aquatic adventure
- (with Mr. Sea Horse:).
-
-
- 11. Does Nickelodeon censor R&S?
-
- The opening titles contain scenes from "Big House Blues" and point to the
- possibility that Nickelodeon has cut scenes from the show. In particular,
- Nick's rendering of BHB does NOT show the scene where Ren is 'drinking from
- the porcelain bus.' Additionally, although Nick originally showed the
- entire "Magic Nose Goblins" ending, they have since then started doing a
- quick fade as the scene panned over the 'field of green.' There are other
- places in the series where editing may have taken place. In particular, in
- "Untamed World", there is a blackout, then a wipe to the next scene.
- Nowhere else does this take place.
-
- From jeffy@athena.mit.edu:
- There were a few incidences in "Big House Blues." In one scene, the
- dogcatcher asks R&S if they like to have fun; R&S agree. "Well go ahead,
- have fun!" [then, in the missing footage, the dogcatcher turns his back, and
- says in a feminine voice, "See if I care."] [If you freeze frame it, you can
- see the dogcatcher turn around and put his hands on his hips in a rather
- feminine stance. Just a brief glance.] Also, during the sleep sequence, Ren
- ends up kissing Stimpy, then wakes up, screams, says something about having
- to "clean himself," and goes to toilet, drinking out of it (not vomiting
- into it). Or maybe it's eating, who can say.
-
- From ja1r+@andrew.cmu.edu:
- Like that other Jeff said, Ren dreams he's having a romantic encounter and
- ends up kissing Stimpy, at which point he instantly wakes up wide-eyed and
- dashes over to the PHENOMENALLY rusty and filthy prison toilet, takes a
- loooong drink to wash his mouth out (!), glares back and Stimpy and shouts,
- "HAVE YOU *NO* SENSE OF PERSONAL HYGIENE???"
-
- Editor's Note: I have finally seen unedited BHB at a local animation
- festival. Most people have forgotten about Stimpy's "sleeper" eyes, and at
- the end of the credits, there is a skull and crossbones. I have also read
- that John K. said that Ren was dreaming of a female chihuahua.
-
- Furthermore, several cartoons have been nixed by Nick including "Man's Best
- Friend (starring George Liquor)" and "Dog Show" because they are too
- "adult." The list seems to continue to grow. "Powdered Toast Man," besides
- it political punch at the end, has caused Catholicism to condemn it because
- of its portrayal of the Pope. "Out West" uses the word "Lord" and "hangin'"
- in the same sentence, which makes Nick weary.
-
- On "Sven Hoek," I have seen a test print. Nick edited the nose goblins down
- and took away the Sven's line "I finally get a good look at them!" They took
- out the sequence where Sven and Stimpy play circus in the closet (and Stimpy
- pretends to be a sword swallower who has a bad accident). They also edited
- out where Ren looks into the camera and says "And I'm going to gouge your
- eyes out! Yea, that's what I'm gonna do!"
-
- On a side note, Nick edited the new WWDTT. It aired "eat olive loaf" and
- when it should be "eat olive loaf till you puke!" And on MTV's airing of
- "Sven Hoek" certain pieces of music were changed for unknown reasons.
-
- Some other cuts are mentioned below in the questions, but their is one
- final stop in our journey of edits and lost footage. In "Haunted House,"
- George Liquor was supposed to be the bloody head fairy, not a knock-off
- of "Doug." (_Cinfantastique_ magazine) On "PTM", the "Pope" was changed
- to "The Funny Little Man With A Pointy Hat," and PTM's closing joke with
- the Constitution and Bill of Rights was edited out all together. "Fake
- Dad" was edited down from a half-hour to a regular 11 minute cartoon
- according to _Cinfantastique_. "Visit To Anthony" was changed because
- Billy West played Ren for one scene only, and its quality is not very good.
-
- Here are some circumstances I have a questions about:
-
- 1. What is on Kowalski's butt in "Fake Dad" ?
- 2. Is it true that Sven and Stimpy had a dinner
- ala Lady and the Tramp in "Sven Hoek" ?
- 3. What happened to Stimpy teaching Ren how to rub
- two squirrels together in "The Great Outdoors" ?
- 4. Why did Bob Camp change the soundtrack in "Sven Hoek" ?
- 5. Will Nick release R&S uncut on VHS? LaserDisc?
- 6. Why and what did they cut out of in "Rubber Nipple Salesmen"
- with George Liquor?
- 7. Why did "The Cat Who Laid The Golden Hairball" end so stupidly?
- 8. What were the original lyrics to the song in "Sven Hoek" ?
- 9. What will they edit in "Man's Best Friend" ?
- 10. Is "Hollywood Hoek" a real episode or a dream?
- 11. Why does "Untamed World" have a unfocused camara during the chase?
- 12. What (and why) is missing from "Visit To Anthony" that was so bad
- that part of it was reanimated with Billy West doing Ren?
- (The scene is the one where Ren bulges his eyes out--the cut to
- the scene looks funny)
- 13. When will the next new third season show air?!
- 14. Why is there a cut in animation during the last part of Father's
- meeting with R&S in "Visit To Anthony" ?
- 15. What was cut out of "Fake Dad"?
- 16. What is in "Untamed World 2" that frightens Nick?
- 17. Why did Nick cut out the "policeman" scene in "Son of Stimpy"?
- 18. Why did Nick edit out the family bath and Ren's beating in "Big Baby
- Scam?"
- 19. Why did Channel 10 (Australia) edit "Mad Dog Hoek"?
-
- (1.) Billy West told me this: whatever you believe it is.
-
- (5.) VHS videos are out--check out the product section of the document.
- Unfortunately, they contain the Nick edits and cuts. Laser Discs are
- currently unavailable.
-
- (6.) After reading _Cinfantastique_ magazine, I finally found out what
- happened in "Rubber Nipple Salesmen" with R&S. Ren knocks on the door, and
- George pops out with the oar (a reference to Man's Best Friend), beats them
- up, takes them inside, and scales them. Then George cleans them and throws
- their parts into the sink, and they say "I think this is going to be a hard
- sell."
-
- (8.) The complete words are on the R&S CD. Check out the product section of
- this FAQ.
-
- (9.) Another edit mentioned in _Cinfantastique_ magazine was "Man's Best
- Friend". Nick will air it only after the violent parts are reanimated
- (including the oar hitting scene, the greatest scene in R&S history).
-
- (15.) Half the episode! Nick also cut out half of Ren's Pecs to boot!
-
- (18.) Nick always hated the family bath idea in the "The Big Baby Scam."
- They also took out Ren's beating because they don't like any violence at
- all. (I guess Nick will never buy G.I. Joe:)
-
- (19.) MDH is just too much for censors in Australia. See R&S Encyclopedia
- for details.
-
-
- 12. What about the music?
-
- Apart from a few selections, there is not a single piece of original music
- in the whole show. Instead, R&S quotes extensively from the classical
- repertoire, as well as 50's style TV themes and takes. In the second season,
- Raymond Scott's works including "Powerhouse" and "Toy Trumpet" have made it
- onto the show. (Carl Stalling, the famous Warner Brothers musical composer
- and director, used his pieces quite frequently.) Space prohibits a complete
- listing of music here.
-
- For some reason, "Sven Hoek" has two versions of background music for
- reasons unknown. One version has aired consistently on Nick, and the other
- on MTV. MTV's version has the Raymond Scott and "Death March of a
- Marionette" pieces missing.
-
- John K. is the voice of Stinky Wizzleteats, according to _Cinfantastique_
- magazine, of the "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song on "Stimpy's Invention." On
- "You Eediot!," Bob Camp plays Stinky.
-
- From Jeffy@athena.mit.edu:
- John K apparently wrote "The Muddy Mudskipper Show" theme, and the [words to
- the (?)] "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song.
-
- From jondr@sco.com:
- Chris Reccardi wrote the [music to the (?)] HHJJ song. He has done work for
- Tiny Toon Adventures, among other things.
-
- Editor's Note: The "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song has made it big. It has hit
- several charts on different programs (like Dr. Demento, see
- rec.music.dementia) and radio stations. It also appears in "Rubber Nipple
- Salesmen" and "Sven Hoek" as a single instrument solo. It has recently
- appeared in "Haunted House" when Stimpy sings it in the shower.
-
- From otg@csi.compuserve.com:
- The closing theme is not an original composition. It's a version of the
- Howlin' Wolf (Chester Burnett) classic blues "Killing Floor". No doubt. In
- fact, it's VERY similar to the arrangement on the Howlin' Wolf Chess Box.
-
- Editor's Note: Official word is that Howlin' Wolf's song is NOT the closing
- theme, but it may sound like it.
-
- Plans for "Der Screamin' Lederhosen" and their R&S record have been
- scrapped. The musical group plays the opening and closing music of R&S,
- which was created in a jam session. Members of the group include Chris
- Reccardi (bass), Scott Huml (drums), and Jim Smith (guitar). Only Jim Smith
- works at Spumco now, with the other two at Stabco; Der Screamin'
- Lederhosen's has broken up (according to John K. himself in a letter I
- received).
-
- Two new R&S CDs are coming out--check out the product section of this FAQ.
-
-
- 13. Where can I get R&S... ? (Note: All dollar amounts are in USA dollars.)
-
- ... animation cels?
-
- Some are going to be auctioned off in December 1992.
- Rumor has it that the cell from Big House Blues went for the most
- at a price (I believe) $7500. (Details are sketchy about this auction.)
-
- If you want one and don't have a lot of money, enter the contest that
- _Ren_And_Stimpy_Exposed!_ magazine is running for us loyal fans; the
- cel is from "The Boy Who Cried Rat!" where R&S are in front of the
- house looking for a plan. Unfortunately, it's over, and I didn't
- win :(.
-
- From David Loshin (loshin@think.com):
-
- As I have mentioned in a previous post, I have seen production animation
- cels offered for sale by a place called
-
- American Royal Are Corp.
- 473 Old Country Road
- Westbury, NY 11590
-
- The price was $495.00, and they have cels from shows from the first
- season (at least; perhaps more). The phone number is 1-800-888-9449.
-
- ... board games?
-
- I just got this for Christmas (so I don't know the price). You can get
- it at Toys R Us (that's what bag it came in and was confirmed).
-
- R&S: THE LOG CEREAL GAME
-
- Each player gets a comic strip (four strips printed on both sides, eight
- episodes) and picks pieces from the big box of cereal. If its your own
- piece you need to complete the puzzle, say a R&S phrase and put it down
- onto your strip. If you don't say the phrase, you lose the piece. If
- you pick someone else's piece, they have to say a phrase before getting
- it. If a LOG piece is picked, follow the directions. There is a History
- Eraser button strip, and if completed, the game never took place!
-
- Overall, a good concept. My only gripes are as follows. "Space Madness"
- and "Stimpy's Invention" are printed on the same mat. All the pieces
- are cardboard! I wish there were some plastic pieces. There is no
- hangin' scene in the "Out West" strip! =O( =O(
-
- Contents of game: Log cereal pieces, Log action pieces, comic strip
- pieces, R&S sticker, History Eraser Button strip, and 4 comic strips.
-
- Rating: Buy it when it comes to an Odd/Big Lots near you!
-
- ... books?
-
- _Pat_The_Stimpy_ (A Nitty Gritty Touchy Smelly Book)
- (I've seen pictures of this book)
-
- Basically, it is "sense"-full (as apposed to Stimpy's senseless:)
- book. An undying tribute to Ren And Stimpy and the 1980's fad
- of puffy and scratch 'n sniff stickers. Touch Stimpy, smell the
- mountain of stinky socks, and more to sense.
-
- From Richard Goldstein (richardg@cheesewiz.EBay.Sun.COM):
-
- Nick is marketing the heck out of R&S, but this was truly hysterical.
- It is illustrated by Chris Reccardi. The book ain't cheap ($9.95), but
- I got it as a gift. It was found in a plain old bookstore.
- ISBN # 0-448-40199-1.
-
- ... bookmarks?
-
- A flat plastic Stimpy or Ren can save your place in your book. Found it
- at Cartoon Corner. Each bookmark has tire treads over it because the
- box cover for it has a truck chasing after R&S. $3.00 a piece.
-
- ... calendars?
-
- "Advance Comics Catalog" reports that a 18 month calendar for
- 1993 and 2nd half 1992 will be available in August from Andrews
- & McMeel. It'll cost $8.95 and will be in full color (from
- michaelb@sol.cse.fau.edu)
-
- Editor's Note: I have one which is a 12 month from the same company.
-
- There is a 1994 calendar from the same people. BUYER BEWARE! My first
- calendar had 9 months, and its replacement had 14-15 months (duplicate
- months). Apparently, their machine is broken. =O( The calendar features
- season 2 shows like "Sven Hoek" and "Son of Stimpy."
-
- ... card games?
-
- From John Nolin (john@porta.b24a.ingr.com):
-
- Just saw it at WE B Toys last night.
-
- The card game resembles Go fish in that you try to collect the most
- pairs of like cards. Some of the cards include:
-
- Yak Powdered Toastman
- Bloated Sack of Protoplasm Mr. Horse
-
- The back of the box said that you could "pick" any pair of cards from
- your opponent if you had the "Magic Nose Goblin" card.
-
- Looks sorta neat, but had a $7 price tag for a single deck of cards.
-
- ... cereal box offers?
-
- Kellogg's offers (USA only for now):
- Frosted Mini-Wheats: 2 UPC Codes (Proofs Of Purchase) for a SNICK
- water-filled keychain.
- Corn Pops: 2 UPC Codes (Proofs Of Purchase) and $6.95
- for a pair of R&S Shorts.
- Rice Krispies Treats: 2 UPC Codes (Proofs Of Purchase) for 2 R&S
- Posters.
-
- ... coffee cups?
-
- A company called "Custom Screenprinting" makes them (from
- bub@vuse.vanderbilt.edu).
-
- ... colorforms?
-
- From Franklin C Malemud (fmalemud@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu):
-
- Hey I just returned from the store Cartoon Corner in the Columbus City
- Center, and now have in my possession....Ren & Stimpy Colorforms.
- The scenerio board is the Space Madness cockpit, and you have a
- veritable plethora of objects to manipulate including a toothbrush, a
- glazed ham, Ren in the water shap that floats, Stimpy, Stimpy sans head,
- Ren, Ren sans head, etc...it is quite enjoyable and was only 6 bucks, so
- recommend it to all y'all. I think the Cartoon Corner is a nat'l chain,
- so you may want to look it up in u'r yellow pages and give em a call.
-
- ... comic books?
-
- See Also #16 and #17 for more information)
-
- Marvel Comics have released the first issue in late October 1992.
-
- Future updates about the comics will be going into its own document.
- E-mail Fred Ochs at ochs@cs.wmich.edu for your copy of it when it was
- ready to be published! (Coming soon to an ftp site near you:)
-
- Recently, Powdered Toast Man made his debut in his own comic book by
- Marvel, and John K. has a deal with Marvel to produce COMIC BOOK(tm
- Spumco), the official Spumco comic book featuring all their characters.
-
- ... dolls and action figures?
-
- Nick has a deal with Mattel to make Ren and Stimpy dolls. According
- to _Previews_ magazine, there will be four dolls. One set of two
- (one Ren and one Stimpy) will each say six phrases from the show.
- (Stimpy's string to talk will be a hairball on his mouth.) The other
- set will make flatulating sounds. The "Farting" dolls cost about $15
- and the "Talking" dolls cost $35 or so. Mattel is also producing
- action figures: Cmdr. Hoek and Cadet Stimpy, Army R&S, and plain ol'
- R&S. Deluxe R&S figures are a "bathtub" Ren and a "catbox" Stimpy.
-
- Dakin also has a deal with Nick and has produced two plush toys. They
- are available at stores like "Cartoon Corner" and "Spencer Gifts."
- Prices run from $14.99 to $35 apiece. For Christmas 1993, Dakin redid
- the R&S Dolls: Stimpy is now dressed in Santa clothes, and Ren is now
- dressed in Reindeer antlers and bells. (They are about the same price as
- the original dolls.)
-
- At Cartoon Corner, mini-dolls of our duo have turned up. Ren is wearing
- a "Powdered Toast Man" T-Shirt, and Stimpy has on a "Gritty Kitty"
- T-shirt on.
-
- ... GIFs?
-
- Check Adam Frampton's R&S FTP list. He posts it bi-weekly on
- alt.tv.ren-n-stimpy. (See #17) BTW, the official ftp site for the
- R&S documents is aug3.augsburg.edu. (See FTP information)
-
- ... key chains?
-
- Cubed Ren and Stimpy bodies which you can mix and match.
-
- ... moving stickers?
-
- Cracker Jacks is holding a advertising gimmick with Nick putting
- these beauties in their boxes. Make Stimpy hwarf onto Ren by changing
- your viewpoint. Cracker Jacks are at a grocery store near you.
-
- ... pillows?
-
- From Kevin Bell (finjkb@finaid.indstate.edu):
-
- I was down at the local Spencer's yesterday and saw something new in the
- R&S line: Pillows! It's a huge pillow retailing for $19.95 in the 3-D
- shape of your favorite cartoon character's face! I personally prefer the
- Stimpy over Ren. Ren just doesn't translate as well.
-
- Editor's Note: "He's talking to pillows, kids!" -- Stimpy Pillow, SBD
-
- ... postcards?
-
- They have turned up in novelty stores like Spencer Gifts.
- Thirty-two postcards for $5.99. (At last look locally, they dropped
- in price to a little over $3.)
-
- ... posters and shirts?
-
- They've now spread to most any mall T-shirt store.
-
- ... sounds?
-
- See Also #17 about the FTP site guide and above question about "GIFS?".
-
- From rogue@cellar.org:
- ab20 was closed back in May (1992). The entire archives have
- been shuttled to wuarchive.wustl.edu and nic.funet.fi. The Ren
- & Stimpy sounds are part of the Amiga archives. (wuarchive has done
- some shuffling of the ab20 files, and no longer has a mirror of the
- old site. The sounds may have been moved to another directory.)
-
- From bkariger@aunix.fullerton.edu:
- We can rightly claim to be the first to have contributed digital
- samplings of Ren & Stimpy audio to INet and several other networks.
- (Well, OK, we are 98% sure of it; and we would like to know of any
- other uploads, both earlier and later.) They originally appeared in
- the Info-Mac archives. (The Info-Mac archives are available (by using
- FTP, account anonymous, any password) in the info-mac directory on
- sumex-aim.stanford.edu [36.44.0.6]. Help files and indices are in
- /info-mac/help.) They are in the /info-mac/sound directory:
-
- ... video games? (In the order of being released)
-
- Nintendo Gameboy: "Space Madness"
- Cadet Stimpy is trying to save Cmdr. Hoek! Stimpy can shoot hairballs
- and collect Powdered Toast.
-
- Super Nintendo: "You Veediots!"
- Help R&S get through 4 episodes including TBWCR and ITA.
-
- Sega Genesis: "Stimpy's Invention"
- Play Ren or Stimpy! Stimpy's Mutato Machine has transformed
- their neighborhood into a dangerous place. Can R&S stop it?
- One or two players; one player games have the other character running
- behind them (like Sonic 2) and can use him to solve puzzles.
-
- ... videos and CDs?
-
- Previous announcements that "Big House Blues" was available on
- "Tournee of Animation" tapes were in error.
-
- I finally got the info, according to roscoe@csd4.csd.uwm.edu:
- (Note: I had to compress the original post for brevity.)

-
- Some other things mentioned in the post that are coming soon:
- R&S trading cards (not Nicktoon trading cards) - Prism??
- R&S will be in Comics Interview #122 (Interview with Bill Wray)
-
- Two promotional CDs have been found: "Little Crock O' Christmas"
- and "Little Eediot."
-
- From Chris Bray (cbray@uafhp.uark.edu):
- > Kurt Philip White (u9360212@wumpus.cc.uow.edu.au) writes:
- > Did anyone hear the radio interview that Ren and Stimpy did in
- > Australia on the 31st October? it was aired on JJJ on Sunday Afternoon
- > Fever, and consisted of Maynard asking what sounded like pre-recorded
- > R&S a few questions, and in between played a couple of songs off "You
- > Idiot" (sp?).
-
- This is from a promo CD called "Little Eediot". I found a copy in a
- local used CD store...It's actually 2 CD's...The first being the 12
- minute interview with spaces for the DJ's voice...(34 tracks) and the
- 2nd CD being 3 songs from You Eediot...
-
- ... water squirters?
-
- At Cartoon Corner, they had R&S's which you could fill up with water.
- When you squeeze their body, water comes out of their mouths. (Stimpy

-
- ... further information?
-
- _Ren_and_Stimpy_Exposed!_ is entire magazine devoted to our favorite
- heroes (Fall/Winter 1992). It had a mailbag where the newsgroup,
- alt.fan.ren-and-stimpy, did get a mention!
-
- There is a spread about R&S on a magazine called _Cinfantastique_.
- It rivals _Film_Threat's_ spread in the amount of information. Look for
- it at Walden Books ($5.50). It carries through the story _R&S_Exposed_
- and _Film_Threat_ began and includes edits of our favorite cartoon.
-
- Go to the library and check out Reader's Guide To Periodicals.
- There are a whole slew of R&S articles from the year of 1991, 1992,
- and 1993. (Newspapers had many articles too.)
-
- _Film_Threat_ magazine has a 18 page article in its December 1992
- issue (number 7). A reprint (basically it is) of the R&S story is
- in a magazine called _Wild_Cartoon_Kingdom_. It has even more pictures,
- info., George Liquor, and the connection between John K. and Batman: The
- Animated Series. WCK came out with a second edition
- featuring Batman TAS Movie and Jimmy the "Hapless" Boy. In WCK 3,
- John K. interviews Beavis and Butthead ("his favorite cartoon") and
- talks about Spumco's last scripts on file. WCKs are must buys!
-
- Also look for "Comics Interview" # 131 for April 1994 as well as
- Saturday night magazine for interviews with John K.
-
- From Jason Price (Jason.Price@launchpad.unc.edu):
-
- I just got back on this newsgroup and I don't know if anyone had seen
- this...
-
- I was walking thru the mall and happened to walk into Walden books to
- look for a AMiga mag and there it was.....In the thousands of mags IT
- stood out like a sore thumb...... " Wild Cartoon Kingdom" by RIP
- Magazine.. I got the last copy of it in the store and the guy told me
- that it was sent to them out of thin air. If you ever wanted to know
- anything about Ren & Stimpy this mag has it.. What Nick thinks about
- R&S, pics of John K, the whole cartoon cast, A full episode guide, SOME
- of the BEST !! pics from your fave episodes. I mean the mag cost 3.95
- but it was worth it. It also has a BIG section on BATMAN and a nother
- full episode guide and real cool pics. DEFINITELY a collectors ITEM.. I
- have to go see if they have any more..... The sad thing is that we had a
- thunderstorm and my windows were up...YES... my mag got wet..;-( ..
- gotta like those water marks.NOT!! I just thought I'd throw it in...
- LOOK FOR IT, ASK FOR IT.
-
- From Joel Schenkle (donnell@mantaray.micro.umn.edu):
-
- Actually, it is put out by the fine folks at "Film Threat". I think they
- are doing this to avoid reissuing the R&S issue of FT, their most
- popular issue, and already a collectors item.
-
- ... watches?
-
- From Synthia Petroka (sap@lucid.com):
-
- I just picked up two different Ren & Stimpy watches at the local Toys R
- Us in San Jose. They were originally marked at $6.99 but were on sale
- at $3.98. They are digital watches, and one has a flip cover with a
- moving animation sequence of our heros bumping butts from the Happy
- Happy Joy Joy song.
-
- For you locals, I was at the store on Capitol at McKee and I found them
- amongst the other cartoon digital watches near the electronics section.
- They also had some Log Cereal Games.
-
- ... "Frontier Log," "Powdered Toast," "Gritty Kitty Litter," etc?
-
- "You sick little monkey!"
- "Don't you know cartoons will ruin your MIND?!"
- -- Ren, "Stimpy's Big Day"
-
- ... other products for the drooling fanboy in each of us?
-
- Stay tuned.
-
-
- 14. Is there a fan club?
-
- Well, this document was created for the fan club on alt.tv.ren-n-stimpy. :)
-
- From jeffy@athena.mit.edu:
- Hahaha! It never occured to me, until I was looking at a just-finished copy
- of X Magazine #10 ("Big Ren & Stimpy Blow-Out" issue, plug plug) to post the
- address of the Almost-Official Ren and Stimpy Fan Club. So:
-
- Ren & Stimpy Fan Club
- 2930 Jacob St.
- Hamtramck, MI 48212
-
- Note:
- **** It is rumored that John K. wants to give me informatio through snail
- mail about the official Ren and Stimpy fan club. Stay tuned here for more
- coming details.
-
-
- 15. What about the future of R&S? (R&S Headline News)
-
- Nutshell:
- We have completed the shows for Season 2.
- Nick is probably saving "Untamed World 2" and "Man's Best Friend"
- for Season 3 (they know that it's the last of the John K. material).
-
-
- Gory Details:
-
- Dateline
- Premiere Date to April 1993:
-
- The future of R&S is very murky at the moment. Rumors are flying of John K's
- dismissal for submitting inappropriate material and being behind schedule.
- The rights to the characters are owned by Nick, so it's conceivable that R&S
- could go on under new management. All of this is way up in the air as this
- goes to print.
-
- John K. has been removed as head of R&S, and Spumco has lost the rights to
- produce R&S. Bob Camp, one of John's partners at Spumco, will head a new
- studio. The name of the company, who is still working on R&S, and other
- facts are all still up in the air as the public is concerned.
-
- Nick announced in late fall 1992 that new Ren And Stimpys will be playing
- starting on November 7, 1992 and play new ones bi-weekly. Nick is also
- looking for a replacement for Ren (and probably Mr. Horse) because John K.
- has decided to quit doing the voice. (Billy West is doing the interim Ren,
- as mentioned above. Although its more like Ren and Peter Lorre combined,
- it's just not John K. But I am biased on this point, though.)
-
- According to a recent poster, John K. now believes that R&S are "dead." He
- may correct in the sense that some of their best material is now banned
- including the disputed "Out West" cartoon. Nick has six shows left to air
- but will hold out as long as possible to keep them fresh; it looks like
- re-run mania until February, a ratings month.
-
- It looks like Ren And Stimpy cult fans are in for a bumpy ride. Nick has
- ordered 65 (sixty-five) episodes for Season 3, which means the creativity
- will go down for sure (if they don't it will be a surprise). The remaining
- Season 2 shows have episodes when Ren is played by Billy West. "Monkey See,
- Monkey Don't" and "Fake Dad" were the only two new R&S from February
- sweeps--not to mention an edited Powdered Toast Man reappeared with the
- title of the "pope" changed to "the funny little man with the pointy hat."
- On the other end of the spectrum, John K. is now working on two shows for
- the fall: "He Hog" (a superatomic pig) and a variety show hosted by George
- Liquor ("Hello! I'm George Liquor, American!").
-
- "Out West," BTW, did make a come back unedited in February sweeps. I
- believe Nick wanted to save their newest song until the "HHJJ" song died
- down in popularity.
-
- "The Great Outdoors" and "The Cat Who Laid The Golden Hairball" have
- premiered. Nick is premiering the rest of the cartoons by single airings.
- MTV is showing R&S at erratic times; keep an eye on your local listings.
-
- April 24, 1993 Update: "Stimpy's Fan Club" airs, and Nick-Mania is showing
- eight shows of our favorite duo. Oh Joy Of Joy!
-
- May 8, 1993: Other new shows have aired and unaired episodes have been in
- limbo. They have been covered in the guide and encyclopedia. John K. is
- planning to bring back the show in a similar format an attitudes with George
- Liquor (Ren-type personality) and Jimmy The Hapless Boy (Stimpy-type dufus)
- in a television show, according to _Cinfantastique_ magazine. Nick Mania has
- SNICK Mania so that R&S gets played two more times than usual--Oh Joy!
- "Visit To Anthony" has been aired.
-
- May 23, 1993: "Kilted Yaksmen" premieres! Big hoopla about it along with
- gigantic flying skirted crocostimpies. :-)
-
- Summer 1993: Due to my co-op assignment, I haven't been able to keep a month
- to month journal on R&S, but many things have happened. _Film_Threat_ has
- re-released their article on R&S in a magazine called _RIP_ (or something
- similar), but details are currently sketchy. R&S Comics have been selling
- like hotcakes; I know of five places that sell it out consistently in my
- area alone! Currently, the comic book is up to #10 (I'm looking for #5);
- first editions are hard to find, so Marvel Comics has released the first
- four issues of R&S is a package re-release; other re-releases may be
- evident! (IMHO, I really liked the artwork in the first story of #9 because
- the artist captured the look, feel, and backgrounds of the show.) See the
- section on the comic book for more details about the R&S Comic book.
-
- I've been reading a lot of different newsgroups about video games and
- animation this summer, and I have discovered something. The R&S video game
- on GameBoy is a cool game (according to our beloved Judex:), and there are
- continual posts about R&S on rec.arts.animation. So make sure you check out
- both! (Look for R&S references in other topics too)
-
- Now onto the show, Ren And Stimpy. A desert of reruns has plagued the fans
- of the show, but we've almost made it to the next season! Season 3 should
- start August 28, but what Games Animations, the new company, will produce on
- its own has yet to be seen. Rumors of a 65 shows for season 3 are still
- flying and may be true; "Rocko" (as advertised on Slime Time sweepstakes)
- will premiere as a new Nicktoon. Will Rocko take over R&S's spot on Sunday?
- How long can trusted Cadet Stimpy and fans hold out? How long before John
- K. wishes he pushed the history eraser button on creating R&S??? :)
-
- (BTW, see the R&S Encyclopedia for more month by month commentary)
-
- October 1993: New shows are coming November 20, 1993!!!
-
- December 1993: Three shows have premiered and have flopped (except NO Pants
- Today). :( "Untamed World 2" has been edited to death according to WCK 2's
- "Nick Boners" section; it may never show up uncut.
-
- May 1994: No shows on SNICK yet.
-
-
- 16. What about the comic book?
-
- The comic book is produced by Marvel Comics. It is currently up to issue
- ninetween, and the PTM spring special is coming out from the same fine
- folks. My friend Jamal can explain the going's on with it better than I
- can. (Thanks Jamal for the info!)
-
- From Jamal Hannah (jamal@silver.lcs.mit.edu):
-
- I also recently talked to an animation-student friend of mine on the phone
- who knows the main artist of the Ren & Stimpy comic pretty well. (Mike
- Kazaleh is the main artist.. he's also known for his work on his own comic:
- "Captain Jack", from Fantagraphics Books, as well as some stories in the
- comic "Critters", also from Fantagraphics Books. More recently Mike has
- done work on "The Mighty Mutimals." ... All of these comics would be in the
- back-issue's section of a comic store. They are worth looking up, because
- Mike Kazaleh has an art style and a zany type of humor of his own that is
- quite enjoyable. Mike has also done animation work for Ralph Bakshi-he
- designed "The Cow" in "The Adventures of Mighty Mouse" (as well as
- animated sequences with him)... in fact, if you really want more Ren &
- Stimpy info from Mike himself, you can try writing to him through Marvel
- comics or Fantagraphics Books (Editor's Note: what are their address?)
-
- Supposedly, John K. didn't like Mike Kazaleh's work in the Ren & Stimpy
- comic, but that's most likely because Mike puts alot more of "himself" into
- the work than John K.. (I'm sure John is rather cynical about most of what
- is going on with his characters at this point.. to think that if he had just
- kept the rights to the characters and gotten a loan, and released the
- cartoons on local access cable stations, or somethign simmilar, he may have
- made less money at first, but would have kept complete creative control of
- his creations and storylines!)
-
-
- 17. Where can I find archived information on R&S?
-
- The official spot for R&S information stored at aug3.augsburg.edu via ftp
- (This is anonymous ftp.). To get the FAQ and other documents through
- e-mail: send an electronic mail message to ren-n-stimpy@aug3.augsburg.edu
- and it will autoreply. With each new updated FAQ, I will be sending a
- message telling the people who asked for it to resend to the listserver if
- they want the updated version.
-
- I have written a supplemental guide to Nick Sayer's
- Not-So-Official-Episode-Guide called "The Ren and Stimpy Encyclopedia." It
- contains miscellaneous info. which the other guide doesn't cover, including
- the components of shows, SNICK airings, and titles of scripts that are in
- production. It is under the filename called "ren-n-stimpy.encyclopedia".
- (It was called "The Ren And Stimpy Extra" previously.)
-
- FTP Sites For Ren And Stimpy are what you are searching? Then try Adam
- Frampton at frampton@access.digex.com for a list of them! (Look for his
- periodic postings on alt.tv.ren-n-stimpy.)
-
-
- 18. Has John K. seen this FAQ or the other R&S documents?
-
- RUMOR: According to "Lobo" at Auggie BBS (aug3.augsburg.edu), he has shown
- it to John K., and he flipped out. He said we did a "good job." More details
- as they come. (BTW, Lobo is a good friend of mine)
-
- December 1993: I am sending a copy of the January documents to John K, which
- he requested. Hopefully, we'll get some comment on our newsgroup. =O)
-
- April 1994: No response yet. =_O(

-
- Be afraid, be very afraid. All is not what it seems. Since the end of the
- cold war, and the break-up of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, many
- espionage units of those groups have been left out in the cold, so to speak.
- A lot of them, with no more military masters to report to, have turned
- capitilist with a vengence and are now into industrial and commercial
- espionage.
- One such spy cell is working in the United States, camouflaged as edu
- types at various institutes of higher learning. This cell is working for the
- fledgling Russian Animation Technocrat (RAT) and is in the process of
- stealing all information on the US cartoon industry technology. Once this
- information and technology is in the hands of RAT, RAT will be able to
- produce cartoons at one tenth of the US cost and will corner the world toon
- market, world domination still being a Russian goal. I am only sure of two
- of the three members of this spy cell, and will most likely loose my life
- for revealing this information, but here goes:
-
- Judex and Norman are spies! And I have my doubts about Adam too! :)

- From Will E. Knight V (wekv@access.digex.net):
-
- I just joined on the 'net and I am pretty new at all this but I hope this
- gets thru to you. I've seen your Ren & Stimpy documents and through reading
- them I was able to call the American Royal Art Gallery in New York. I found
- out that John K. was to be there April 10th for a signing of his new
- characters Sodi Pop and George Liquor and Jimmy. So I made the trek there
- and met with the world renowned John K. I mention you and the work that you
- have put in to letting the 'net know about his work. He knew of you (he
- mentioned your name before I did) and was appreciative of you. He wants you
- to give out the info for the R&S Fan club info and address (he didn't have
- the info with him). So there it is. If you could please write me back and
- let me know you got this and leave me the fan club info (I need to send some
- stuff to him)
-
- Ed. Note: MOST EXCELLENT WORK, WILL! Good job for going out for us R&S Fans!

-
- 19. What are John Kricfalusi's future projects?
-
- The following are from different sources, with several of them corroborating
- each other. I acknowledge the newsgroup, the magazines, and Billy West.
- Soon, btw, this information will become its own FAQ, the Spumco FAQ, I am
- working on during this summer.
-
-
- The NBC Peacock
-
- An apparent move to finance future projects, John K. has designed a
- commercial for NBC. It has a peacock pulling off a plunger and displaying
- its plummage.
-
- From Jon C Austin (ja2592@gamera.acs.appstate.edu):
- >David Price (dprice@convex.com) writes:
-
- >I just spotted something the other night. Several times I have seen
- >that NBC runs a 10-15 second cartoon at the top of the hour which
- >parodies their old peacock logo. The cartoon peacock at first has no
- >tail. Then he takes a deep breath and strains really hard. The tail
- >pops out in rainbow colors - the end. They also play the old peacock
- >logo music from the 1960's.
-
- >Why am I mentioning this? Because the other night I noticed that for
- >a few seconds at the beginning, the familiar "John K." signature
- >appears in the corner of the screen. The peacock has that "John K."
- >look.
-
- >SO, does this mean that John K. has some working relationship with NBC
- >now? Hmmmm. Maybe there is a new series in the works.
-
- NBC this season contracted with a number of graphic artists to make
- variation on the NBC peacock. You see different ones at different times
- throughout the broadcast schedule : the morphing peacock. the
- peacock collage, and yes, the John K. peacock. He was contracted
- by NBC to make one: the one that David describes above.
-
- These do not show at the same time every day. But I have noticed
- the John K. peacock has run at 8PM EST the last two Thursday nights.
-
- From Mike Cohen (isis@netcom.com):
-
- I remember a great quote from John K in that piece that had me ROTFL. He
- said something like "I always dreamt of animating a bird that blows
- something wonderful & colorful out of its butt".
-
-
- "He Hog The Atomic Pig"
-
- From Ron O'Dell (keeper@cats.ucsc.edu):
-
- Excerpts from what appeared in last weekend's "USA Weekend":
-
- Ren & Stimpy's creator John Kricfalusi, ousted by Nickelodeon last
- year, makes his cartoon comeback with `He Hog the Atomic Pig'.
- The swine's power: supersensitive taste buds. He fights crime with
- his sidekick, Half-life, a decaying molecule. Look for the powerful
- porker on cable or video next year.
-
-
- "The Ripping Friends"
-
- Here's a quote from WCK from John K. about the show:
-
- "It's about the world's most manly men, who win their battles through sheer,
- raw manliness and willpower. They don't have superpowers, but they have the
- suits. They think superheroes are wimps because they have to cheat to win
- their battles--how manly are you if you have a superpower? You could beat
- the crap out of anyone! That's not very manly. A manly guy will take the
- pain along with the victory. It's got to hurt to win--that's
- _The_Ripping_Friends_."
-
-
- No Official Title Yet: "George Liquor's Variety Show"
-
- No real info yet, but it might have George paired up with Jimmy The Hapless
- Boy doing R&S-type humor. (Rumored that the first cartoon will feature
- George and Jimmy going hunting--a manly sport!)
-
-
- "Brik Blastoff Of The Outback"
-
- From Paul Martin Barry (pmbarry@acs.ucalgary.ca):
-
- The December issue of Film Threat has some more info and a couple pictures
- of "He-Hog the Atomic Pig", along with a shelved project John K. was
- working on "Brik Blastoff of the Outback". Brik Blastoff seems to be
- along the same lines as "The Killing Friends", although he revamped it to
- include some nudity for a pitch to the Playboy Channel. Playboy
- apparently "just didn't get the humor."
-
- He-Hog is being independently financed, with some funds coming from the
- Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. (CBC) It is slated to appear in
- early 1994 on the CBC, with an appearence in the US soon after possibly
- on either USA Network, or the cartoon channel (ugh).
-
- Editor's Note: BTW, it's the Cartoon Network, not the cartoon channel, and
- the "Killing Friends" should be the "Ripping Friends."
